A French tourist has twice punched a shark after it attacked him while surfing at Victoria’s iconic Bells Beach.
Dylan, 23, was on his board yesterday afternoon when he felt the brute chomp at his right leg.
“I punched him one time, he stay in my legs, two times, after… he go,” he told 9News.
Local surfer Matt Sedunary was also out in the water at the time of the attack. He thought Dylan was joking around when he first heard his screams for help. He quickly rushed to help.
“I’m not just going to ditch this guy… most people would do the same thing,” Mr Sedunary told 9News.
Witness Graham Blade was filming from a cliff lookout when the shark surfaced and zeroed in on the tourist and continued circling as Dylan and Mr Sedunary dashed for shore.
Mr Sedunary said he had no idea the animal was still following the pair until he saw the footage.
“When we’re paddling in and you can see the shark behind I didn’t know it was still there,” he said.
Both Dylan and Mr Sedunary made it safely back to shore.
Dylan required stitchers for a few puncture wounds. He plans to return to the water.
“I really want to go back soon… just when my leg.. its okay… I’m going to go back surf soon,” he said.
Shark attacks are a rare occurrence at Bells Beach. At this stage it’s unclear what species of shark was responsible for the incident.
