NMIMR and WACCBIC Scientists have successfully sequenced genomes of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic.
In simple terms, Ghanaian scientists who work at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the West Africa Center for Biology for Infections Pathogens at the University of Ghana have successfully examined the structure of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by taking samples of the virus from travelers who arrived in the county and locals who contacted the virus with no travel history.
The purpose of this research was to find out if the virus has mutated or changed after being exposed to our environment.
Findings of the research:
They believe we dealing with the same pathogens that was first tested in China with 92% similarity to that found in Wuhan. It has not changed its genetic make-up significantly since most pathogens evolves or mutates when exposed to different environments or different carriers. This research was necessary because there’s the possibility of the virus going through changes due to environmental factors and different people carrying it.
This research can help develop a vaccine or a potential drug in the future.
