Billboard says Shatta Wale is “20-year-old”

In a recent article sighted by blissgh on billboard.com, the music industry chart giant claims that Ghanaian dancehall act Shatta Wale is a “20-year-old”.

In a descriptive write-up or summary to honour the dancehall icon for ranking as the most-watched Ghanaian artiste on youtube for the year under review, this is what they had to say:

“Wale’s 2019 album is called Wonder Boy, and the 20-year-old singer-songwriter and actor seems determined to live up to that name. The country’s two biggest political parties have used his songs in campaigns; his 2018 album, Reign, hit No. 6 on Billboard’s Top World Albums chart; and in April, he organized the online Faith Concert to cheer up fellow Ghanaians during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

This is not the first time such a well established and respected brand has goofed in giving false information about an African artiste, especially a Ghanaian. We all remember somewhere last year when in an attempt to wish Sarkodie on his birthday, awards scheme BET posted Strogman’s picture instead of Sarkodie’s.

This kind of behaviour makes one wonder if these organisations do any due diligence when dealing with African acts. How difficult is it to come by a picture of Sarkodie, or the age of Shatta Wale? All these information are readily available on their Wikipedia pages.
